CAIRO: Security forces foiled an attempt to smuggle 93 kilos of silver valued at more than 3 million EGP ($383,000) through the Cairo airport.
After investigation, the forces found that two Libyans with the help of Egyptians working in EgyptAir Company tried to smuggle a large amount of silver artifacts coming from Thailand to be sold in Egypt without paying taxes.
A police report was made and the two Libyans and three EgyptAir workers were arrested.
Officials at the Borg al-Arab airport near Alexandria detained a woman traveling to Dubai last week for being in possession of 320,000 Saudi Riyals ($85,000.)
The woman, identified as “A.G.” had the bills on her person, which were discovered during routine security screening.
The Sallum border also sees numerous smuggling attempts, and is under scrutiny from security officials. In April, a man was arrested trying to carry $1.9 million across the border into Libya.
