ABUJA: The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Anambra Command, seized 704.687 kg of illicit drugs and arrested 395 suspected traffickers in 2014, the Commander, Mr Sule Momodu said.
Momodu, who made the disclosure in Awka, said that of the 395 arrested, 29 suspects had been convicted.
According to him, 86 new cases have been filed in the court, while 57 drug addicts were counselled and have since been reintegrated into the community.
Describing 2014 as an eventful year, Momodu said the command was involved in arrests, seizures, counselling and series of public enlightenment campaigns.
He said the command was also involved in a series of lectures to create awareness in the area of use of firearms and terrorism prevention.
Momodu expressed appreciation to Gov. Willie Obiano for approving a parcel of land and N60 million for the NDLEA to construct a modern rehabilitation centre in Awka.
“Under Obiano, the NDLEA in 2014 was enlisted into the membership of Security Council of the state and a member of the Joint Security Task Force.
“The command fared well during the period but will fare better this year with a mandate of reducing the availability of drugs in the streets of Anambra to the barest minimum,” he said
