PTBA cries foul at glitches in ST registration

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tax Bar Association (PTBA) has written in to the FBR chairman complaining about difficult and time-consuming procedure for sale tax registration.
In a letter to FBR Chairman Tariq Bajwa, the PTBA pointed out that the current system for ST registration was time-consuming as it required two to three months to get a manufacturing unit registered for sales tax.
The PTBA opined that the existing system was unfriendly and encouraging malpractices instead of facilitating taxpayers. The PTBA urged the FBR to introduce a hassle-free and quick system for sales tax registration.
The tax bar feared that the number of sales tax registered persons would not increase if the registration process was not overhauled on war footings. It pointed out that apart from taxpayers, tax professionals were also finding it difficult to deal with issues related to all three taxes – income tax, sales tax and Federal Excise Duty. The PTBA stressed the need for the establishment of regional hubs to resolve all Pral-related issues within five working days.
The bar regretted that neither ambiguities in tax return form for Tax Year 2015 could be removed so far despite the lapse of two months, nor the form could be uploaded on the FBR e-portal for e-filing.
The PTBA claimed that 70 percent of the problems being faced at operational level in the FBR were due to Pral and its software platform. The association strongly recommended to the FBR chairman to outsource its IT systems on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis to create a state-of-the-art IT infrastructure.
