RENO: Reno-Tahoe International Airport has filed a complaint with U.S. customs officials over the treatment of a 15-year-old Mexican girl who allegedly was detained for hours without a chance to contact her family.
Airport officials say the girl was questioned for five hours last month after she flew to Reno from Guadalajara, Mexico.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials told the Reno Gazette-Journal (http://tinyurl.com/qb98xd2) she was pulled aside during processing because she had overstayed her travel visa by 11 days during a previous visit.
The girl says the customs agents told her that her visa was cancelled and she was going to be deported.
Airport Authority President Andy Wirth says such behavior should not be tolerated.
Wirth says they filed a formal complaint Dec. 16. He says they’ve received a number of similar complaints in recent months.
