ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Interior Senator Rehman Malik has ordered to conduct an inquiry of theft of seized mobile phones at Faisalabad Dry Port.
Senate Standing Committee meeting was held under the chairmanship of Senator Rehman Malik. During the meeting, Senator Ateeq Sheikh briefed the committee that how mobiles phones were being stolen from dry port Faisalabad and replaced with dummies.
Chairman Senator Rehman Malik asked the ministry of interior to submit a report that how illegal phones were being imported in the country. He asked how those captured mobiles went missing and who are responsible for it and why no action has been taken against responsible officials.
Chairman Senator Rehman Malik informed the committee that he had taken suo moto notice and has sought progress report on sudden devaluation of Pakistani rupees twice i.e. on 9th October, 2018 and on 30th November, 2018 as it has adversely affected the economy of the country.
He said that in this regards, FIA was directed to investigate on the guidelines provided in its detailed letter of December 26th, 2018 to identify that there is a cartel operating in the country against the economy and business interests of Pakistan.
He also dismissed the impressions that taking notice of the devaluation of Pakistani rupee is the subject of Senate Standing Committee on Finance alone and added that FIA has the responsibility to regulate and implement Foreign Exchange Act so it falls under Senate Standing Committee on Interior too.
Senator Rehman Malik said that the committee will expose all such cartels that are functioning in nexus and intentionally raise the prices of dollars by locking the banks’ transactions technically to force the government to devalue the rupee. He said that he has the experience of dealing with these types of cartels in the past as Interior Minister of the country and also as senior official of the FIA. He said that this committee will help the government as how these illegally based multinational companies and money exchangers are operating just to serve their own interest by destroying our national economy and interests.
Chairman Committee Senator Rehman Malik directed FIA to expose and bring to justice all these culprits who had earned billions by misusing and exploiting the country’s economic system. He has asked the country’s premier agencies ISI, MI and IB to help FIA in identifying such cartels and economic criminals involved in white collar crimes and illegal financial activities across the country.
